Year 11 students from the newly rebuilt Beacon Hill School in South Shields were given a behind the scenes tour of our factory and offices in May. The tour was aimed at showing students what kind of job roles could be available to them when they leave school as well as developing an understanding of what it takes to run a successful business.

The students from Beacon Hill School met with managing director, Michael Dickson, to hear about the challenges of running a large food operation and the important role that the workforce plays in its success before being led round the production facility for a closer inspection. Our butchers and bakers spent time with the children, explaining how ingredients are sourced and the complex processes used to turn these ingredients into the familiar product range.

The visit attracted interest from local media such as the Shields Gazette. Michael Dickson explained the purpose of the visit to the newspaper, saying:

“Opening up our doors to young people like this is hugely important for the future success of our business and for that of the borough.  It is important for the next generation of workers to beleive that there are real opportunities for them locally.”

Michael went on to say:

“We invest heavily in ongoing training and development and believe in promoting from within whenever possible which is why we have great staff retention and are able to offer attractive opportunities to school leavers.  Whilst we value experience, as a business we look for individuals who have the right attitude and work ethic.”

After the tour was completed, one teacher at Beacon Hill school commented:

“The students really enjoyed the visit, it’s not often you get a chance of a behind the scenes look at how some of their favourite products are made. Seeing the many different roles that people play within the factory provided them with huge encouragement that there are real career opportunities available to them once they leave school.”
