Established in 1953, M. I. Dickson Ltd is Tyne and Wear’s leading family-run manufacturer, retailer and wholesaler of own recipe meat and food products.
Founded by Michael Irwin Dickson in a shop at the Nook in South Shields, where all products were manufactured in the back shop, Michael built a reputation for the quality and flavour of his pork products.
At the time of his death in 1966, he had 2 shops. Michael’s son (also called Michael) and elder daughter, Christine, have grown the business from two shops to the current 24 locations across Tyne and Wear, alongside a thriving wholesale business.
To always provide the highest quality products and service to our customers
We strive to maintain family business principles in everything we do. That includes looking after our employees and making them feel like part of our wider family. A huge 47% of our workforce have been with us for more than 5 years and 26% have been with us for more than 10. That tells us we must be doing something right.
We also believe in maintaining the successful business relationships that have stood us in good stead over the years. We have stayed with many of the same smaller suppliers, often family businesses, for many years. The fact that we still source our ingredients from the same suppliers we did 60 years ago ensures that our products have maintained the consistently high standards we have always achieved.
Meet The Family
Michael is the Managing Director and worked with his sister Christine when their father died in 1966 to take the business from 1 shop to the 22 stores we have today as well as a growing wholesale business. This year saw the Company celebrate 60 years….a great accomplishment!
Michael is the father of 4 children who form part of the Family Council and has 3 granddaughters, so when not teaching them the art of pie or sausage making, he enjoys walking in the Lake District and sometimes jetting off to higher mountains further afield in places in Nepal, India or South America.
Elena Dickson is Michael’s youngest daughter. She studied Food Science at Leeds University and used much of her holidays working in various departments around the family business. On graduating she spent almost 4 years after graduating working for United Biscuits in London and Manchester.
She opted to take a “career break” at the age of 25 to travel the world, which she did on her own, returning 4 months later than the “agreed” time frame with her father!
Elena joined the family business full time in September 2004 and has worked in many roles within the business to learn her trade. She is now Marketing Director for the business and is a lead member of the Retail Operations team. Rest assured that your orders are safe in her hands!
A family business with a big future
In 2009-10 Dickson’s was awarded the Coutts Prize for Family Business. This recognised that Dickson’s growth and success through the generations has been done without losing the strong family and community values that have shaped the business’s identity.
Through our website we are now able to offer our customers even more choice and a new type of service, so that you can enjoy the same ease and convenience with your local butchers as you can with supermarket brands.
